Interview excerpts from The Spot by Cal Norton:
What made you decide to rewrite the 12 steps? Why Oh?
I thought I’d simplify the third step* by turning it into twelve. A little do-si-do you know? So many of us have a hard time with the concept of God. The G-word is just a word. I think Which is a fitting stand-in. Sharing a which centered frame of reference for whiches to get cozy with their Whichness is the ultimate goal.
Rather than calling it The 12 Steps of Which or something like that, Oh hopefully conveys that ah-ha moment when you recognize a movement within “the dance”.
*to turn one’s will and life over to the care of God as one understands God
The dance?
The Dance dance. Hafiz knew all the moves.
Every child has known God,
Not the God of names,
Not the God of don’ts,
Not the God who ever does anything weird,
But the God who knows only 4 words.
And keeps repeating them, saying
“Come Dance With Me, come dance.”
Prior to Toasting you didn’t write. You’d only journaled a handful of times. It’s a solid freshman effort. What advice would you give to other budding writers?
Place everything you know on a divine altar (if you can’t find the altar, ask for directions). Offer everything, your preferences, your desires, your very soul. The offered soul will tell a story. Write it down.
